The Astronomical Society of East Texas has rescheduled SCHOOL NIGHT FOR ASTRONOMY, an astronomical viewing at the Mineola Nature Preserve on Fri., March 31, 2017.
This is open to the public and is especially for all public, private and home school students and their parents.
The program will begin about 5:00pm with solar viewing until sunset. Celestial viewing will follow at 7:30 pm. The event will conclude by 11:00pm.
This is a weather permitting event. In the event of rain or clouds, the event will be cancelled. An announcement of cancellation will be broadcast on KMOO 99.9 FM Radio at 4pm. Also NO GO will on our website: www.asetexas.org and our Facebook page.
Dress properly for the weather conditions. Be prepared for Mosquitoes-long pants, long sleeves. NO SPRAY INSECT REPELLENT!
With the aid of Jonathan and Diane Kavanough and Don Kilfoyle, we had beautiful skies to show almost 35 school student what the heavens look like at night at the Nature Preserve through telescopes. We had students from Lindale, Mineola, Quitman and one from Winnsboro along with several home schools students. We even had one student from Lindale complete his Astronomy merit badge for Boys Scouts. Don Kilfoyle brought his new 12" Dodsonian telescope. The early attenders even got to look at the Sun through a telescope that was equiped with a Sun filter. They also saw half-a-dozen Sunspots which is rare these days.
